Ahab Has to Have His NL Central Whale

Background:

Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo has torn a ligament in his right knee resulting from a collision near first base on Thursday, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Friday. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Gallardo will miss an extended portion of the season and might need surgery…

Gallardo was injured in the fifth inning of Thursday’s game against the Cubs when he rushed toward first base to cover a slow roller… Gallardo stayed on the ground for a few minutes, but managed to walk it off and keep pitching, completing the inning and another before leaving. (emphasis mine)

Scene:

Visitor’s dugout, Wrigley Field. Fifth inning, 5/1/08. Gallardo comes up lame after covering first base.
Concerned Citizen: Ned Yost, take Gallardo out of the damned game!

Ned Yost: NO! NOOOOOOOOO! (shoves the Gatorade water coolers to the ground)

Ned Yost: I will not sacrifice the NL Central title again. We’ve made too many sacrifices already. Too many retreats. An injury invades our pitching staff and we fall back. (points at Ben Sheets, coddled in bubble wrap and rocking himself gently to sleep) The Chicago Cubs assimilate Japanese stars and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further! And I will make them pay for what they’ve done to Yovani!

Concerned Citizen: (pauses, points in general direction of mound) You broke your starting pitcher. (pauses again) See you around, Ahab. (leaves dugout)
